Why is son preference so persistent in East and South Asia? a cross-country study of China, India, and the Republic of Korea
Son preference has persisted in the face of sweeping economic and social changes in China, India, and the Republic of Korea. The authors attribute this to their similar family systems, which generate strong disincentives to raise daughters while valuing adult women's contributions to the household. Urbanization, female education, and employment can only slowly change these incentives without more direct efforts by the state and civil society to increase the flexibility of the kinship system such that daughters and sons can be perceived as being more equally valuable. Extended Formulations in Mixed-integer Convex Programming
We present a unifying framework for generating extended formulations for the
polyhedral outer approximations used in algorithms for mixed-integer convex
programming (MICP). Extended formulations lead to fewer iterations of outer
approximation algorithms and generally faster solution times. First, we observe
that all MICP instances from the MINLPLIB2 benchmark library are conic
representable with standard symmetric and nonsymmetric cones. Conic
reformulations are shown to be effective extended formulations themselves
because they encode separability structure. For mixed-integer
conic-representable problems, we provide the first outer approximation
algorithm with finite-time convergence guarantees, opening a path for the use
of conic solvers for continuous relaxations. We then connect the popular
modeling framework of disciplined convex programming (DCP) to the existence of
extended formulations independent of conic representability. We present
evidence that our approach can yield significant gains in practice, with the
solution of a number of open instances from the MINLPLIB2 benchmark library.Comment: To be presented at IPCO 201
A Framework of New Hybrid Features for Intelligent Detection of Zero Hour Phishing Websites
Existing machine learning based approaches for detecting zero hour phishing websites have moderate accuracy and false alarm rates and rely heavily on limited types of features. Phishers are constantly learning their features and use sophisticated tools to adopt the features in phishing websites to evade detections. Therefore, there is a need for continuous discovery of new, robust and more diverse types of prediction features to improve resilience against detection evasions. This paper proposes a framework for predicting zero hour phishing websites by introducing new hybrid features with high prediction performances. Prediction performance of the features was investigated using eight machine learning algorithms in which Random Forest algorithm performed the best with accuracy and false negative rates of 98.45% and 0.73% respectively. It was found that domain registration information and webpage reputation types of features were strong predictors when compared to other feature types. On individual features, webpage reputation features were highly ranked in terms of feature importance weights. The prediction runtime per webpage measured at 7.63s suggest that our approach has a potential for real time applications. Our framework is able to detect phishing websites hosted in either compromised or dedicated phishing domains
Human cerebral malaria and Plasmodium falciparum genotypes in Malawi
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Cerebral malaria, a severe form of <it>Plasmodium falciparum </it>infection, is an important cause of mortality in sub-Saharan African children. A Taqman 24 Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP) molecular barcode assay was developed for use in laboratory parasites which estimates genotype number and identifies the predominant genotype.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>The 24 SNP assay was used to determine predominant genotypes in blood and tissues from autopsy and clinical patients with cerebral malaria.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Single genotypes were shared between the peripheral blood, the brain, and other tissues of cerebral malaria patients, while malaria-infected patients who died of non-malarial causes had mixed genetic signatures in tissues examined. Children with retinopathy-positive cerebral malaria had significantly less complex infections than those without retinopathy (OR = 3.7, 95% CI [1.51-9.10]).The complexity of infections significantly decreased over the malaria season in retinopathy-positive patients compared to retinopathy-negative patients.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Cerebral malaria patients harbour a single or small set of predominant parasites; patients with incidental parasitaemia sustain infections involving diverse genotypes. Limited diversity in the peripheral blood of cerebral malaria patients and correlation with tissues supports peripheral blood samples as appropriate for genome-wide association studies of parasite determinants of pathogenicity.</p

Burden of Total and Cause-Specific Mortality Related to Tobacco Smoking among Adults Aged â„45 Years in Asia: A Pooled Analysis of 21 Cohorts
Background: Tobacco smoking is a major risk factor for many diseases. We sought to quantify the burden of tobacco-smoking-related deaths in Asia, in parts of which men's smoking prevalence is among the world's highest. Methods and Findings: We performed pooled analyses of data from 1,049,929 participants in 21 cohorts in Asia to quantify the risks of total and cause-specific mortality associated with tobacco smoking using adjusted hazard ratios and their 95% confidence intervals. We then estimated smoking-related deaths among adults aged â„45 y in 2004 in Bangladesh, India, mainland China, Japan, Republic of Korea, Singapore, and Taiwanâaccounting for âŒ71% of Asia's total population. An approximately 1.44-fold (95% CIâ=â1.37â1.51) and 1.48-fold (1.38â1.58) elevated risk of death from any cause was found in male and female ever-smokers, respectively. In 2004, active tobacco smoking accounted for approximately 15.8% (95% CIâ=â14.3%â17.2%) and 3.3% (2.6%â4.0%) of deaths, respectively, in men and women aged â„45 y in the seven countries/regions combined, with a total number of estimated deaths of âŒ1,575,500 (95% CIâ=â1,398,000â1,744,700). Among men, approximately 11.4%, 30.5%, and 19.8% of deaths due to cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and respiratory diseases, respectively, were attributable to tobacco smoking. Corresponding proportions for East Asian women were 3.7%, 4.6%, and 1.7%, respectively. The strongest association with tobacco smoking was found for lung cancer: a 3- to 4-fold elevated risk, accounting for 60.5% and 16.7% of lung cancer deaths, respectively, in Asian men and East Asian women aged â„45 y. Conclusions: Tobacco smoking is associated with a substantially elevated risk of mortality, accounting for approximately 2 million deaths in adults aged â„45 y throughout Asia in 2004. It is likely that smoking-related deaths in Asia will continue to rise over the next few decades if no effective smoking control programs are implemented.</p
Biochar-based adsorbents for carbon dioxide capture: a critical review
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is the main anthropogenic greenhouse gas contributing to global warming, causing tremendous impacts on the global ecosystem. Fossil fuel combustion is the main anthropogenic source of CO2 emissions. Biochar, a porous carbonaceous material produced through the thermochemical conversion of organic materials in oxygen-depleted conditions, is emerging as a cost-effective green sorbent to maintain environmental quality by capturing CO2. Currently, the modification of biochar using different physico-chemical processes, as well as the synthesis of biochar composites to enhance the contaminant sorption capacity, has drawn significant interest from the scientific community, which could also be used for capturing CO2. This review summarizes and evaluates the potential of using pristine and engineered biochar as CO2 capturing media, as well as the factors influencing the CO2 adsorption capacity of biochar and issues related to the synthesis of biochar-based CO2 adsorbents. The CO2 adsorption capacity of biochar is greatly governed by physico-chemical properties of biochar such as specific surface area, microporosity, aromaticity, hydrophobicity and the presence of basic functional groups which are influenced by feedstock type and production conditions of biochar. Micropore area (R2âŻ=âŻ0.9032, nâŻ=âŻ32) and micropore volume (R2âŻ=âŻ0.8793, nâŻ=âŻ32) showed a significant positive relationship with CO2 adsorption capacity of biochar. These properties of biochar are closely related to the type of feedstock and the thermochemical conditions of biochar production. Engineered biochar significantly increases CO2 adsorption capacity of pristine biochar due to modification of surface properties. Despite the progress in biochar development, further studies should be conducted to develop cost-effective, sustainable biochar-based composites for use in large-scale CO2 capture
Measurement of the inclusive and dijet cross-sections of b-jets in pp collisions at sqrt(s) = 7 TeV with the ATLAS detector
The inclusive and dijet production cross-sections have been measured for jets
containing b-hadrons (b-jets) in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass
energy of sqrt(s) = 7 TeV, using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. The
measurements use data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34 pb^-1.
The b-jets are identified using either a lifetime-based method, where secondary
decay vertices of b-hadrons in jets are reconstructed using information from
the tracking detectors, or a muon-based method where the presence of a muon is
used to identify semileptonic decays of b-hadrons inside jets. The inclusive
b-jet cross-section is measured as a function of transverse momentum in the
range 20 < pT < 400 GeV and rapidity in the range |y| < 2.1. The bbbar-dijet
cross-section is measured as a function of the dijet invariant mass in the
range 110 < m_jj < 760 GeV, the azimuthal angle difference between the two jets
and the angular variable chi in two dijet mass regions. The results are
compared with next-to-leading-order QCD predictions. Good agreement is observed
between the measured cross-sections and the predictions obtained using POWHEG +
Pythia. MC@NLO + Herwig shows good agreement with the measured bbbar-dijet
cross-section. However, it does not reproduce the measured inclusive
cross-section well, particularly for central b-jets with large transverse
